The five nominees are each chosen by their national jury. The idea of the Swedbank Art Award has always been to acknowledge the work of one outstanding contemporary artist, the innovativeness and transcultural understandability of the artist's work.
The Swedbank Art Award was founded in 2000. Several modifications were made in the process of the art award last year. The art award expanded to Sweden and Russia. Every other year the art award exhibition will be held outside Estonia in one of the participating countries. This year the art award exhibition and ceremony will be held in Riga Art Space (Latvia) in December.
